Manual or Motorized Rolling Shutters: What to Buy
Choose manual rolling shutters if hand operation suits the opening and how often you will use it. Consider motorized roll-down shutters when control access or frequent operation makes a motor useful. Compare the complete quoted configuration, not just a product title containing “electric” or “motorized-ready.”
What does the catalog price include?
A listing may describe a manual shutter with an optional motor upgrade. Another may describe a motorized configuration. Do not assume a remote, switch, motor, wiring or backup option is included unless the listing and office confirmation say so. Ask for a written list of the components in your quote.
Browse rolling hurricane shutters and check both the stated finished dimensions and the opening fit. If the information is inconsistent, call before ordering. Our shutter size guide explains the distinction.
Compare operation at your actual opening
| Decision | Manual configuration | Motorized configuration |
|---|---|---|
| Daily use | Check access to the operating mechanism and the effort required. | Confirm the control type, location and which components are included. |
| Power outage | Ask how the specified manual mechanism works. | Confirm an available manual override or compatible backup arrangement for the exact motor. |
| Project cost | Compare the shutter, hardware and installation. | Also compare motor, controls and any electrical work. |
| Maintenance | Follow the manufacturer's care and operating instructions. | Follow those instructions and the requirements for the motor and controls. |
Questions to answer before adding a motor
- Where will the shutter housing and side rails mount?
- Can you reach the intended control or manual mechanism safely?
- How will the shutter operate if power is unavailable?
- Who will handle any required wiring and installation?
- Does the complete configuration meet the applicable product approval?
Do not assume that an optional motor can be added to every size or model. Ask the office about compatibility before comparing a manual listing with a motorized quote. Your installer should review the mounting, electrical work and access requirements.
Storm protection and security are separate checks
Rolling shutters can close exterior windows and doors, and buyers also consider them for privacy and after-hours closure. A hurricane impact approval does not automatically certify burglary resistance. If security shutters are your main goal, discuss the locking arrangement, mounting and intended use with the office. Keep required exit access in the project review.

Can I get the final delivered price from a catalog listing?
No. The listed configuration is a starting point for comparison. Shipping and any order changes need office review; installation is arranged separately.
